International schools in Paraguay (2026): what we could verify
Public schools are free, the national year runs February to November, and the Colegio Goethe is the best-documented international option.

Basic education in Paraguay is nine obligatory grades and is free in public schools; the 2026 national school year runs from 23 February to 30 November. Private schools need recognition from the Ministry of Education (MEC) to issue official titles. The migration law is reported to say that irregular migration status cannot block a child's enrolment in a public or private school. Two international schools are documented well enough to describe: the Colegio Goethe (German school, Paraguayan Bachillerato with four profiles from grade 10) and the American School of Asunción (US high-school diploma, per a 2020 brochure). We found no published tuition on any school site we could read, so we give none.
The system in brief
- Basic school education is nine grades and obligatory; it is free in public schools, including preschool (General Education Law 1264/98).
- Instruction is in the child's mother official language (Spanish or Guaraní) from first grade, with the other taught as a second language.
- The school year has at least 200 working days. The 2026 public-school calendar, as reported by the press: classes from 23 February, winter break 13–23 July, academic activities end 30 November. Some international schools follow a different year: the American School of Asunción described a US-style year in a 2020 document.
- Private schools that want to issue official titles need recognition and are supervised by the MEC; they may add their own admission rules.
- The law leaves recognition or conversion of foreign studies to MEC regulations: we could not read the procedure, so ask the school and the MEC what documents (apostilled transcripts, translations) they need.
- MEC says public-school enrolment is free and parent-association fees cannot be a condition of enrolling.
Residency status and enrolment
A Paraguayan business-law outlet reports that the 2022 migration law says irregular status cannot be an impediment to enrolling a child in a public or private school; we could not read the article itself. For residency, children aged 0 to 17 are a separate DNM category and apply with parents who hold, or apply for, residency in the same act. See the residency guide.
Colegio Goethe (Deutsche Schule Asunción)
From the school's own site: a German school abroad combining German education standards with a multilingual orientation. Its national title is the Paraguayan Bachillerato Científico, based fully on MEC requirements. From grade 10 pupils choose one of four profiles, the fourth being the GIB (we could not confirm from the school's page what it leads to: ask the school). German is taught intensively from the initial level, Guaraní basics from grade 1 and English from grade 5, and pupils can earn the German language diplomas DSD I and II. Kindergarten admission is handled mid-year for the next school year (for 2027 the child had to be 4 by 31 March 2027, with applications in July 2026 and a maturity assessment in August): check the school's current notice, because applying does not guarantee a place. Documents include birth certificate and cédula copies of the child and both parents, a photo and a sworn income declaration of both parents; enrolling an admitted child needs the original birth certificate, a vaccination record and a vision and hearing certificate. The matrícula amount is not stated in the notice.
American School of Asunción
We could not read the school's own site. A 2020 recruitment brochure by a search firm describes a school founded in 1954, from pre-kindergarten to grade 12, bilingual, with a US high-school diploma and a Paraguayan studies diploma, accredited by Cognia and by the MEC, and a test centre for the PSAT, SAT and AP. Details may have changed since: ask the school for current curriculum, calendar and fees.
What it costs
No school site we could read publishes tuition. User-submitted Numbeo data (October 2026) shows a private full-day preschool at about ₲1.07 million a month and an international primary school at about ₲33.3 million a year (about US$5,800), with wide ranges: treat both as rough. See cost of living in Asunción.
