Why I built Expectat — and why I think more of us need to wake up to the choice we actually have.
I spent more than a decade in the corporate world before I did the thing you're supposed to admire: I became an entrepreneur. The part nobody warns you about is that where you do it matters more than almost anything else.
I built my business in Spain. On paper, a dream. In practice, I was bleeding — income tax, corporate tax, and social-security fees that arrived whether I earned or not. Every year I worked harder and kept less, and the story never seemed to end.
Until I'd had enough. I closed the company. Then I rebuilt the exact same business — same work, same clients — in Estonia and the United States. For now. Almost overnight things got easier: simpler rules, lighter weight, room to breathe and grow. I'm still optimizing today, especially how I take my dividends and how to make my life both easier and more financially efficient. That work never really stops — and that's the point.
Why Expectat exists
I want this to be a beacon of hope for everyone who feels tied to a job and a postcode. You are not as stuck as the system needs you to believe.
Because things are getting rough. Geopolitics are shifting the ground under plans we were told were safe. For those who are awake, the retirement certainty our parents believed in now looks a lot more like uncertainty — and waiting and hoping is itself a decision, rarely the best one.
What this actually is
Expectat is everything I've learned over these past years, distilled. I used every tool I could — including AI — to teach myself, cut through the jargon, and find my way around an industry built on fear: the tax auditors, and the consultants who, more than ever, advise you to stay put and do nothing because “the government will hunt you down if you move.”
That advice serves them, not you. Moving your life and your capital to where they're treated fairly is legal, deliberate, and far more accessible than they want you to think. I'm living proof it works — not perfectly, not overnight, but really.
What I believe
- Residency is a choice, not a life sentence.
- Tax is a structure you can design, not a fate you accept.
- Money can be sovereign — yours to hold and to move.
- Information should set you free, not scare you into staying.
