Hungary digital nomad visa 2026: requirements, tax & how to apply
The short answer

Hungary's digital nomad route is the White Card residence permit. You must show at least EUR 3,000 net monthly income from foreign sources for the six months before you apply, and maintain it. It is valid for one year, extendable once for a second year, then you must leave or switch categories.

Overview

Hungary has a genuine, formal digital nomad route: the White Card (fehér kártya), a residence permit created specifically for third-country nationals who work remotely. It is governed by Hungary's immigration authority, the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (NDGAP), and its conditions are published on the official portal oif.gov.hu.

The White Card lets you live in Hungary while your employer, company and income all stay abroad. It is one of the cheaper nomad permits in the EU and gives you a base inside the Schengen Area. The trade-off is that it is short-lived, it does not lead to permanent residence or citizenship, and it does not let your family join you.

It is a residence permit, not a work visaThe White Card explicitly forbids gainful activity inside Hungary. You may not take a Hungarian employer, invoice Hungarian clients, or own or manage a Hungarian company. Your work and your money must both originate outside Hungary.

Who it's for

The White Card is designed for non-EU/EEA nationals in one of two situations:

  • Remote employees who work for a company based outside Hungary using IT/telecommunications tools.
  • Owners or managers of a company registered outside Hungary who can show the company is profitable and their income comes from it.

EU/EEA and Swiss citizens do not need it — they already have free movement and can register a residence directly. If you hold a passport from an EU state, this guide is not your route.

Income requirement (exact)

Per the official NDGAP factsheet, you must prove a monthly income of at least EUR 3,000 net for the six months preceding your entry, and you must maintain that level of income throughout your stay. This is one of the lowest income floors among EU nomad permits.

Watch the figure before you applySome second-hand guides still quote lower numbers (EUR 2,000). The current official threshold is EUR 3,000 net per month. Because the requirement can be revised, confirm the live figure on oif.gov.hu or with the consulate before you file. Getting the number wrong is the most common reason applications stall.

You evidence income with bank statements covering the prior six months plus your employment contract, employer letter, or company ownership and profit documents — all showing the money is foreign-sourced. You must also show accommodation in Hungary (a lease, property deed, or long-term booking).

Tax treatment: does it make you tax-resident?

The White Card is an immigration status, not a tax status — but living in Hungary can make you tax-resident regardless of the permit. Under Hungarian rules, spending more than 183 days in Hungary in a calendar year (or having your centre of vital interests or habitual abode there) generally makes you a Hungarian tax resident, taxable on worldwide income.

Hungary's headline personal income tax is a flat 15%, one of the lowest in the EU. If you become tax-resident and are not covered by your home social-security system, social contributions can also apply. An A1 certificate (for those staying inside their EU/EEA social-security system) or a totalisation agreement can remove the social-contribution layer; a double-tax treaty between Hungary and your home country decides which side taxes what.

The default plan is the riskA nomad who drifts past 183 days without checking their treaty position can end up owing Hungarian tax on worldwide income they assumed was taxed elsewhere. Decide your tax residency deliberately, before you move, not after.

Duration & renewal

The White Card is issued for a maximum of one year. It can be extended once, for a further year. That is the ceiling: two years total. It does not count toward permanent residence, and time on a White Card does not build a path to Hungarian citizenship. When the second year ends you must leave Hungary or qualify for a different residence category.

Family

This is the White Card's hardest limitation. Family members cannot obtain residence permits for the purpose of family reunification with a White Card holder. A spouse or child cannot ride along on your status. The only exception in the official rules is a child born in Hungary to a White Card holder during the permit's validity.

If you are relocating with a partner or children, the White Card is usually the wrong tool — you would each need an independent basis to stay, or a different permit category altogether.

How to apply

  • Confirm eligibility and gather documents: valid passport, proof of at least EUR 3,000 net monthly income for the prior six months, foreign employment contract or company/profit documents, proof of Hungarian accommodation, health insurance, and passport photos.
  • Choose where to file. If you are outside Hungary, apply at a Hungarian embassy or consulate. If you are a visa-exempt national already legally in Hungary, you can apply through the Enter Hungary online platform or at a regional NDGAP office.
  • Submit the application and pay the fee. Applications from abroad are lodged with the consular mission; in-country applications go through Enter Hungary or in person.
  • Wait for the decision. Typical processing runs about 30–60 days depending on the office and how complete your file is.
  • Collect the permit in person in Hungary and register your address. Enter within the visa validity if you were issued an entry visa alongside the permit.
  • Track the clock. If you want a second year, file the extension before your first-year permit expires, showing your income and accommodation still meet the conditions.

How Expectat helps you get there

The White Card is cheap to file but easy to get wrong, and its two-year ceiling means it only makes sense as part of a larger plan. We make sure it fits yours before you commit.

  • We map your situation and your numbers — your income sources, your day-count, and where you actually become tax-resident — so the permit works with your tax position instead of against it.
  • We pressure-test the White Card against your real goal: if you need family to join, a longer horizon, or a path to permanent residence, we point you to the right Hungarian or EU category before you waste a filing on a dead-end two-year permit.
  • We execute on the ground with vetted local partners — accommodation proof, income documentation, health insurance and the Enter Hungary or consular filing — so the application clears the first time.

Frequently asked questions

Does Hungary actually have a digital nomad visa?

Yes. It is called the White Card (fehér kártya), a residence permit for non-EU remote workers introduced by Hungary's immigration authority. It is a real, formal route — not just a repurposed long-stay visa.

How much income do I need for the Hungary White Card?

At least EUR 3,000 net per month, proven for the six months before you enter Hungary and maintained during your stay. The income must come from foreign employment or a foreign company — no Hungarian employers or clients.

Can I bring my spouse and children on a White Card?

No. Family reunification is not available to White Card holders. The only exception in the official rules is a child born in Hungary during the permit's validity. Families usually need a different permit category.

Will the White Card make me a Hungarian tax resident?

The permit itself does not, but spending more than 183 days in Hungary in a year (or having your main home or centre of interests there) generally does. Hungarian residents pay a flat 15% income tax on worldwide income, subject to any double-tax treaty.

Can I extend the White Card or get permanent residence?

You can extend it once, for a second year, giving a two-year maximum. It does not lead to permanent residence or citizenship and time on it does not count toward either. After two years you must leave or switch to another category.
