Cyprus digital nomad visa 2026: requirements, tax & how to apply
Cyprus has a formal digital nomad visa for non-EU remote workers — a one-year permit on €3,500/month of foreign income that, unlike the visa itself, only triggers tax once you cross the day thresholds.

Cyprus's digital nomad visa lets non-EU nationals live in Cyprus while working remotely for employers or clients abroad. You must prove stable net monthly income of at least €3,500, rising 20% for a spouse and 15% per child. The permit runs one year and renews for up to two more. The visa alone does not make you tax-resident.
Overview
Cyprus has a genuine, purpose-built Digital Nomad Visa, introduced by a Council of Ministers decision on 15 October 2021 and run by the Migration Department of the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection. It lets third-country (non-EU/EEA) nationals reside in Cyprus while working remotely — either as employees of a company registered abroad, or self-employed serving clients located outside Cyprus. It is a national immigration scheme with a fixed annual quota, not an open-ended residence route.
The scheme launched with a ceiling of 100 permits, was raised to 500, and in 2025 the cap was doubled to 1,000 permits — a change the Deputy Ministry reaffirmed when it reopened the application window in October 2025. Because places are capped, timing matters: applications are processed against the live quota, so the window can close once the cap is reached.
Who it's for
The visa fits non-EU nationals whose income comes from outside Cyprus: a salaried remote employee of a foreign-registered company, or a freelancer or contractor invoicing clients abroad. You must be able to perform your work remotely using telecommunications technology. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens do not need it — they have free-movement rights and simply register locally.
It is not a route for people who want to work for the Cypriot market. Family members admitted alongside you may live in Cyprus for the same period but are not permitted to work or carry out any economic activity on the island. If your plan involves local employment or a Cyprus-based business, the digital nomad visa is the wrong tool.
Income requirement (2026)
You must prove stable and sufficient net monthly income of at least €3,500, evidenced after the deduction of taxes and contributions and paid from a source outside Cyprus. The figure rises with family members you bring:
- Main applicant: €3,500/month net.
- Add a spouse or civil partner: +20% (a household total of about €4,200/month).
- Add each minor child: +15% (about €525/month per child).
- Evidence expected: an employment or service contract, six months of bank statements showing consistent deposits, and pay slips or invoices issued to foreign clients — a stable stream, not a single large deposit.
Tax treatment: does the visa make you tax-resident?
No — the permit is an immigration document, not a tax ruling. Cyprus decides tax residency by presence. Under the standard 183-day rule, spending more than 183 days in Cyprus in a calendar year makes you tax-resident on your worldwide income. Cyprus also offers a 60-day rule: you can become tax-resident on as few as 60 days if you are not tax-resident anywhere else, do not spend more than 183 days in any single other country, and maintain a permanent home plus a business tie or employment in Cyprus. Spend fewer days and meet neither test, and you generally remain non-resident for Cyprus tax.
For those who do become resident, Cyprus is deliberately favourable. Personal income tax is progressive with the first €19,500 tax-free (a 2026 reform is raising this band). New residents can claim non-domiciled (non-dom) status for up to 17 years, which exempts worldwide dividends and interest from the Special Defence Contribution — so passive investment income is effectively untaxed for that period. High earners taking up Cyprus employment can also claim a 50% income-tax exemption on employment income above a set threshold (historically €55,000/year). See our Cyprus tax residency guide for the full mechanics.
Duration & renewal
The digital nomad residence permit is valid for one year. It can be renewed for a further two years, giving a maximum stay of three years under the scheme. Renewal requires an up-to-date file: a passport valid at least three months beyond submission, current employment or service contracts, proof that net income still meets €3,500 plus the family uplifts, health insurance and proof of accommodation. The scheme does not itself lead to permanent residency or citizenship — for that you would switch to another category and count qualifying years of legal residence.
Family
You can bring your spouse or civil partner and your minor children. They receive residence permits tied to and matching the duration of yours. In exchange for the higher income you must show — +20% for a spouse and +15% per child — the trade-off is a hard limit: family members may not work or engage in any economic activity in Cyprus for the duration of the permit. Bring the usual civil documents (marriage and birth certificates), apostilled and officially translated.
How to apply
- Confirm eligibility: non-EU national, remote work for an employer or clients outside Cyprus, and net income of at least €3,500/month with the family uplifts.
- Assemble your file: passport, proof of remote employment or self-employment, six months of bank statements, proof of income at or above threshold, private health insurance, a clean criminal-record certificate, and proof of accommodation in Cyprus.
- Enter Cyprus (visa-nationals arrange the appropriate entry visa first), then apply in person to the Migration Department within the permitted window after arrival.
- Submit biometrics and pay the registration and permit fees.
- Wait for examination — typically about 5 to 7 weeks — and collect the residence permit.
- Register locally as required, arrange health cover, and plan your day-count and tax position for your first Cypriot tax year.
- Renew before expiry for up to two further years, refreshing your income and document evidence each time.

The quota, fees and income multiples are set by the scheme and can change between application rounds — confirm the current cap status and fee schedule with the Migration Department before you file, since places can run out mid-year.
How Expectat helps you get there
Cyprus is one of the cleaner nomad plays in the EU precisely because the visa and the tax status are decoupled — but that only works in your favour if you engineer the day-count and the non-dom position on purpose. The mistakes we see are showing income the wrong way for a net threshold, and drifting past 183 days (or triggering the 60-day rule) without having decided whether you want Cyprus tax residency at all.
- We map your situation and numbers — income type, family, and target days in Cyprus — and confirm the digital nomad visa is the right route versus a Cyprus employment or self-employment permit.
- We model your tax outcome both ways: staying non-resident, or becoming resident to claim non-dom and the 50% employment exemption — so you choose your day-count deliberately, not by accident.
- We execute on the ground with vetted local partners — document apostille and translation, health cover, the Migration Department filing and biometrics, and tax registration if you go resident.

Frequently asked questions
Does Cyprus have a real digital nomad visa?
Yes. Cyprus introduced a formal Digital Nomad Visa by Council of Ministers decision in October 2021, run by the Migration Department. It lets non-EU nationals live in Cyprus while working remotely for employers or clients abroad, on a one-year permit renewable for up to two more years, under an annual quota now set at 1,000 permits.
How much income do I need for the Cyprus digital nomad visa in 2026?
At least €3,500 per month in net income from a source outside Cyprus. The threshold rises by 20% if you bring a spouse (about €4,200 total) and by a further 15% for each minor child (about €525 each). You prove it with contracts, six months of bank statements and pay slips or invoices.
Will the Cyprus digital nomad visa make me pay tax in Cyprus?
Not by itself. The permit is an immigration document, not a tax ruling. You become a Cyprus tax resident only if you spend more than 183 days there in a year, or meet the 60-day rule. If you do become resident, non-dom status exempts worldwide dividends and interest from the Special Defence Contribution for up to 17 years.
Can my family join me on the Cyprus digital nomad visa?
Yes. Your spouse or civil partner and minor children can live in Cyprus for the same period as your permit. Each raises the income you must show — +20% for a spouse and +15% per child — but family members are not allowed to work or run a business in Cyprus for the duration of the permit.
How long does the Cyprus digital nomad visa last and can I get permanent residency?
The permit is valid for one year and renews for up to two further years, a three-year ceiling under the scheme. It does not itself lead to permanent residency or citizenship; for that you would move to another residence category and count qualifying years of legal residence in Cyprus.
