Colombia digital nomad visa 2026: requirements, tax & how to apply
Colombia has a formal digital nomad visa for remote workers earning from foreign clients, valid up to two years.

Colombia runs a formal Visitor (V) digital nomad visa for remote workers and freelancers paid by foreign companies. You must show monthly income of at least three times the Colombian minimum wage, about COP 5,252,715 (~USD 1,400) in 2026. It is valid up to two years. The visa itself does not make you a tax resident.
Overview
Colombia has a genuine, formal digital nomad visa. It is a subtype of the Visitor (V) visa, created under immigration Resolution 5477 of 2022 and administered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (the Cancilleria). It lets foreign remote workers and freelancers live in Colombia while working for clients or employers based outside the country. Because it sits in the Visitor category rather than the Migrant (M) category, it is designed for a defined stay, not as a stepping stone to permanent residency.
Who it's for
The visa fits two profiles. The first is remote employees and freelancers who provide telework or digital services from Colombia for companies and clients located abroad. The second is entrepreneurs who want to start a digital-content or IT venture that is of interest to Colombia. In practice the great majority of applicants are the first type: salaried remote workers and independent contractors who want to base themselves in Medellin, Bogota or the coast while keeping their existing foreign income.
Income requirement (exact)
You must demonstrate a minimum monthly income of three times the Colombian legal monthly minimum wage (SMMLV). The SMMLV for 2026 is COP 1,750,905, so the threshold is COP 5,252,715 per month, roughly USD 1,400 at 2026 exchange rates. The figure moves each year because the minimum wage is reset annually, so confirm the current number before applying.
- The income must come from foreign sources, traceable to employers or clients outside Colombia.
- The threshold is tested per month, not on average. Each of the last three months should independently meet the minimum; a single low month can sink the application.
- Employees typically prove it with three months of pay slips plus a current employment contract; freelancers use three to six months of bank statements alongside invoices or client contracts.
Tax treatment: does it make you a tax resident?
No. Holding the digital nomad visa does not, by itself, make you a Colombian tax resident. Tax residency is a separate, physical-presence question decided by the tax authority (DIAN), not by your visa type. You become a Colombian tax resident if you are present in the country for more than 183 days within any 365-day period, continuous or not.
The distinction matters. Stay under 183 days and, broadly, only Colombian-source income is taxable, which for someone working purely for foreign clients is usually little or nothing. Cross 183 days and you become a tax resident taxed on worldwide income at Colombia's progressive rates, and you must register with DIAN, obtain a tax ID (RUT) and file an annual return. There is no special reduced tax rate attached to the digital nomad visa. Note also that Colombia has no income-tax treaty with the United States, though it does have double-tax treaties with several other countries, so your home-country position depends on your nationality.
Duration & renewal
The visa is granted for a validity of up to two years. It does not renew automatically. When it expires you must file a fresh application or switch to another visa category. Because it is a Visitor (V) visa, time spent on it does not count toward Colombian permanent residency (the Resident, or R, visa) or citizenship. If your goal is long-term settlement, a Migrant (M) visa route is the appropriate path instead.
Family
Your spouse or permanent partner and dependent children can be included as beneficiaries on the same visa status. Each beneficiary is subject to the same government fees as the main applicant, so budget the study and issuance fees per person, not per family.
How to apply
- Confirm you meet the current income threshold (3x SMMLV) and gather three to six months of proof from foreign sources.
- Prepare supporting documents: valid passport, passport photo, employment contract or client contracts and invoices, bank statements, and proof of health insurance valid in Colombia. Translate documents into Spanish where required.
- Create an account on the Cancilleria's online visa portal (tramitesmre.cancilleria.gov.co) and complete the Visa Type V digital nomad form.
- Upload your documents and pay the study (processing) fee of about USD 55 on submission.
- Wait for a decision, usually within roughly 5 to 15 business days; respond promptly to any request for additional information.
- Once approved, pay the visa issuance fee (about USD 178) within the deadline given, typically around 10 days.
- After arriving, register with Migracion Colombia and obtain your cedula de extranjeria (foreigner ID card) within the required window to avoid fines.

Frequently asked questions
Does Colombia actually have a digital nomad visa?
Yes. It is a formal subtype of the Visitor (V) visa, created under Resolution 5477 of 2022 and issued by the Cancilleria for remote workers and freelancers paid by foreign companies.
How much do I need to earn to qualify?
At least three times the Colombian monthly minimum wage. For 2026 that is COP 5,252,715 per month, about USD 1,400, and the income must come from foreign sources and be met in each of the recent months, not on average.
Will the digital nomad visa make me pay tax in Colombia?
Not on its own. You become a Colombian tax resident, taxed on worldwide income, only if you spend more than 183 days in any 365-day period. Stay under that line and generally only Colombian-source income is taxable.
Can I bring my family?
Yes. A spouse or permanent partner and dependent children can be added as beneficiaries, but each pays the same government fees as the main applicant.
Does time on this visa lead to permanent residency?
No. It is a Visitor visa valid up to two years and does not count toward Colombia's Resident (R) visa or citizenship. For long-term settlement you need a Migrant (M) visa route instead.
