Cost of living in San Salvador, El Salvador in 2026
What Numbeo's crowd-sourced July 2026 estimates say a month in San Salvador costs, with the arithmetic shown and the caveats up front.

Numbeo's crowd-sourced estimates put a one-bedroom outside San Salvador's centre at US$770.00 a month and one in the centre at US$898.99. Adding utilities (US$129.92) and internet (US$42.50) gives an illustrative US$942.42 for a single person outside the centre, before food. These are user-submitted averages that vary widely.
Overview and what these numbers are
San Salvador is the capital and the practical base for most foreigners who move to El Salvador. This guide builds a monthly budget from Numbeo's San Salvador cost-of-living page as it stood in July 2026. Numbeo is a crowd-sourced database: the figures are averages of user-submitted estimates, quoted in US dollars, not official statistics or shop-price surveys. Sample sizes can be small, individual entries vary widely, and prices differ sharply between a neighbourhood supermarket and an upmarket one.
As of September 2026 we have not seen the Numbeo figures superseded, but treat every number below as an indicative middle estimate. Where we add figures together, we label the result an "illustrative sum" and show the arithmetic. We do not add anything Numbeo does not publish, so groceries, health cover, furnishing and travel are left for you to price locally. For the safety picture that shapes where people choose to live, see our safety in El Salvador guide.
Rent: the biggest line
Numbeo's user-submitted rent estimates for San Salvador are:
| Property | Monthly rent (USD) |
|---|---|
| 1-bedroom apartment, city centre | 898.99 |
| 1-bedroom apartment, outside the centre | 770.00 |
| 3-bedroom apartment, city centre | 1,810.00 |
| 3-bedroom apartment, outside the centre | 1,360.00 |
The centre-to-outer gap is about US$129 a month for a one-bedroom (898.99 minus 770.00) and US$450 for a three-bedroom (1,810.00 minus 1,360.00). Numbeo also lists nearby municipalities as comparison cities, with distances from San Salvador: Soyapango (7.11 km), Antiguo Cuscatlan (8.78 km), Mejicanos (9.29 km), Nuevo Cuscatlan (15.65 km) and Santa Tecla (16.87 km). Numbeo gives no separate rents for them in this data, so check listings directly.
If you would rather buy, Numbeo's estimates are US$2,778.06 per square metre in the city centre and US$1,824.25 outside it, with a 20-year fixed mortgage rate of 8.50 percent. Foreign buyers should take advice on financing; our banking in El Salvador guide covers opening and using accounts.
Utilities, internet, phone and transport
| Item | Numbeo estimate (USD) |
|---|---|
| Basic utilities, 85 m2 apartment (electricity, heating, cooling, water, garbage) | 129.92 |
| Broadband internet (unlimited, 60 Mbps or higher) | 42.50 |
| Mobile plan (calls plus 10GB+ data) | 21.25 |
| Monthly public transport pass | 37.50 |
| One-way local transport ticket | 0.35 |
| Taxi: start / per km / one hour waiting | 6.00 / 3.00 / 20.00 |
| Gasoline, 1 litre | 1.19 |
| Monthly fitness club | 31.60 |
The utilities figure is high relative to the local salary data below, and the item includes cooling, so it will depend heavily on air-conditioning use. Taxi starting fares at US$6.00 make the one-way local ticket (US$0.35) and the monthly pass the more economical options for day-to-day travel, if the routes suit you.
Eating out, groceries and daily items
| Item | Numbeo estimate (USD) |
|---|---|
| Meal, inexpensive restaurant | 7.00 |
| Meal for two, mid-range restaurant (three courses, no drinks) | 43.50 |
| Cappuccino | 3.59 |
| Domestic draft beer (0.5 l) | 2.00 |
| Milk (1 l) | 1.82 |
| Loaf of white bread (500 g) | 2.85 |
| White rice (1 kg) | 1.41 |
| Eggs (12) | 3.08 |
| Chicken fillets (1 kg) | 6.97 |
| Beef round (1 kg) | 10.25 |
| Bananas (1 kg) | 1.50 |
| Tomatoes (1 kg) | 3.45 |
| Bottle of mid-range wine | 12.00 |
Some of these look surprisingly high next to the rent figures: apples at US$5.06 a kilo and bread at US$2.85 are high for a market where rice is US$1.41 a kilo, and we cannot tell from Numbeo which products or shops those entries reflect. Rice, bananas and chicken are the cheaper staples in the list. Because the sample is crowd-sourced, your own shopping basket at local markets may differ noticeably.
An illustrative monthly build-up
The table below adds only Numbeo lines with arithmetic shown. It assumes the 85 m2 utilities figure applies to whatever you rent (it will not exactly), and it leaves out groceries, health cover, furnishing, leisure and travel.
| Illustrative sum | Arithmetic (USD) | Total (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Single, 1-bed outside centre: rent + utilities + internet | 770.00 + 129.92 + 42.50 | 942.42 |
| Same, plus mobile plan and transport pass | 942.42 + 21.25 + 37.50 | 1,001.17 |
| Single, 1-bed in centre: rent + utilities + internet | 898.99 + 129.92 + 42.50 | 1,071.41 |
| Family, 3-bed outside centre: rent + utilities + internet | 1,360.00 + 129.92 + 42.50 | 1,532.42 |
| Family, 3-bed in centre: rent + utilities + internet | 1,810.00 + 129.92 + 42.50 | 1,982.42 |
Add your own food budget on top. As one rough marker, twenty meals at the inexpensive-restaurant price of US$7.00 would be US$140 (20 x 7.00), taking the second row to US$1,141.17 before any groceries or drinks. That is an example of arithmetic, not a forecast of what you will spend.
Local incomes and the residency thresholds
Numbeo's average monthly net salary after tax in San Salvador is US$379.71. Against that, a one-bedroom outside the centre at US$770.00 costs more than twice the average net salary (770.00 divided by 379.71 is about 2.03). This is a strong signal that these prices are set by, and suited to, people earning outside the local labour market, and that locals in the same neighbourhoods are often stretched.
The commerce and services minimum wage is US$408.80 a month, in force since 1 June 2025 (EY, citing the labour ministry). Check for an update, as we did not find a 2026 change. That wage also sets the income thresholds in the migration law. Under Art. 144 a pensionado needs a permanent pension from abroad of at least three minimum wages, and under Art. 145 a rentista needs at least four, or six if two or more people accompany them. At US$408.80 that is our arithmetic:
- Pensionado: 3 x 408.80 = US$1,226.40 a month.
- Rentista: 4 x 408.80 = US$1,635.20 a month.
- Rentista with two or more companions: 6 x 408.80 = US$2,452.80 a month.
Compare the single-person illustrative sum of about US$1,001 with the rentista threshold of US$1,635.20: on these figures a single rentista would meet the income test with room left over, but a family of three or more on the higher threshold, renting centrally (US$1,982.42 before food), has far less margin. Pensionados and rentistas are barred from most paid work in the country. Full rules are in our retire in El Salvador guide and tax residency guide.
Schools
Numbeo lists a private full-day preschool or kindergarten at US$162.67 a month per child, and international primary school tuition at US$4,720.00 a year per child (about US$393 a month if spread over twelve months: 4,720 divided by 12 is 393.33). Only two data points are involved and fees at specific schools will differ; see the international schools guide for individual schools.
Challenges and downsides
- The data are crowd-sourced. Numbeo does not audit submissions, and small samples can push single lines around.
- Housing is expensive against local wages. The average net salary of US$379.71 is below the US$770.00 outer-area one-bedroom rent.
- Utilities at US$129.92 for an 85 m2 apartment are a large fixed cost, and cooling drives them.
- Some staples (apples US$5.06 per kilo, cheese US$7.71 per kilo) are pricey, so a home-cooked budget is not automatically cheap.
- Borrowing is costly: the Numbeo mortgage rate is 8.50 percent.
- Prices reflect the capital only. Coastal towns and other cities are not in this data.
- Where you live in the metropolitan area is also a safety question; read the government and critics' positions in our safety guide rather than relying on cost alone.
Who this budget suits
On these estimates San Salvador works best for someone with income earned outside the local economy, such as a pension, savings or remote earnings, who can absorb rent that runs above twice the local average net salary. It is a weaker fit for anyone planning to live on a local salary, because the figures above sit far above the US$379.71 average and the US$408.80 minimum wage. Single people renting outside the centre face the lowest fixed costs in this data; families in central three-bedrooms face the highest. Because Numbeo covers only the capital, people considering the coast or smaller cities should gather separate quotes before comparing.
Where to verify
Before committing to a lease, compare live listings and ask landlords what the utilities include. For immigration and income thresholds, check the migration authority (DGME) directly. Minimum-wage changes are announced by the labour ministry, and the thresholds above move with them.
