Latvia digital nomad visa 2026: requirements, tax & how to apply

Latvia's remote-work route is a long-stay D visa, not a residence permit — it runs one year, renews once, and only takes non-EU nationals working for an OECD employer or their own OECD-registered business.

Latvia digital nomad visa 2026: requirements, tax & how to apply
The short answer

Latvia offers a long-stay (D) visa for remote work rather than a branded digital nomad visa. You must earn at least 2.5 times Latvia's prior-year average gross salary — €4,213 per month on the figure published by the immigration authority (PMLP) — and work remotely for an employer or self-employed business registered in an OECD country. It runs one year and can be renewed once.

Overview

Latvia does not market a branded "digital nomad visa." What it offers is a long-stay (D) visa for remote work, introduced in 2022, that does the same job: it lets a non-EU national live in Latvia while working remotely for an employer or business based abroad. The visa is administered by the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP — Pilsonības un migrācijas lietu pārvalde) and is issued for up to one year, renewable once.

It is a visa, not a residence permitThe remote-work D visa is a long-stay national visa, not a temporary residence permit. It does not count towards permanent residence or citizenship, and it carries no right to take up employment inside Latvia. Its purpose is to let you work remotely for a foreign employer or your own foreign business while living in the country.

Who it's for

The route is narrow by design. Latvia only opens it to remote workers whose income comes from within the OECD. You qualify if both of these are true:

  • You are a citizen of a third country (non-EU / EEA / Switzerland).
  • You are employed by an employer registered in an OECD member state, or you are a self-employed person registered in an OECD member state, and you can perform that work remotely while in Latvia.

The OECD condition is the key filter. If your employer or your own company is registered in a country outside the OECD, you do not qualify for this visa, regardless of your income. You also cannot use the visa to work for a Latvian employer or take a local job — recipients have no right to employment in Latvia.

Income requirement (exact)

You must earn a monthly wage of at least 2.5 times Latvia's average gross monthly salary for the previous year. On the figure published on the PMLP remote-work visa page, that works out to €4,213 per month. Because the benchmark is tied to the prior year's average salary reported by Latvia's Central Statistical Bureau, the exact euro amount is recalculated every year and drifts upward — some 2026 aggregator sources cite a higher figure of around €4,538. Treat €4,213 as the official anchor and confirm the current number before you file.

Verify the current figure before you applyThe threshold moves with Latvia's average salary and is updated annually. Confirm the exact multiplier and current euro amount directly with the PMLP or your nearest Latvian embassy or consulate before you commit to a timeline — a stale figure is the most common reason a strong application still fails.

Tax treatment: does it make you a tax resident?

Holding the visa does not, by itself, make you a Latvian tax resident. Your days and your home do. You become a Latvian tax resident if you spend 183 days or more in Latvia within any 12-month period, or if you have a permanent (declared) place of residence in Latvia. Once resident, Latvia taxes your worldwide income.

There is no special reduced tax rate for remote-work visa holders — a resident nomad is taxed like any other Latvian resident. In 2026 personal income tax is progressive: 25.5% on annual income up to €105,300 and 33% above that, with an additional 3% solidarity surcharge on income over €200,000. A personal allowance of €6,600 per year (€550 per month) applies before tax.

The 183-day trapStay under 183 days and avoid declaring a permanent home in Latvia, and you generally remain a non-resident with no Latvian tax on your foreign income. Cross 183 days and your worldwide income becomes taxable in Latvia at 25.5% or more. If your home country also claims you, the outcome turns on the applicable double-tax treaty and your tie-breaker facts — model this before you move, not after.

Duration & renewal

The visa is issued for up to one year. It can be renewed once for a second year, giving a maximum stay of about two years on this route. It does not accrue towards permanent residence, so if your goal is long-term settlement in Latvia you would need to switch to a residence-permit ground — such as employment, business, or Latvia's investment (golden visa) route — rather than relying on the remote-work visa as a path.

Family

Family members are not automatically covered by the main applicant's remote-work visa. A spouse and children generally have to qualify and apply on their own basis — for example their own long-stay visa — rather than being attached as dependants to the remote-work permit. If you are relocating with family, plan each person's status separately and budget for it; do not assume the household travels on one application.

How to apply

  1. Confirm you qualify: you are a third-country national and your employer or your own registered business is based in an OECD member state, with work you can do remotely.
  2. Gather proof of income for the months before applying (bank statements, employment contract or self-employment/tax registration) showing at least the 2.5x average-salary threshold — around €4,213 per month, verified against the current figure.
  3. Buy health insurance valid in Latvia and the Schengen area with a minimum liability limit of €42,600.
  4. Prepare your valid travel document, application form, a recent photo, and proof of your place of residence in Latvia (lease or accommodation).
  5. Book an appointment and submit the application at the nearest Latvian embassy or consulate (or at the PMLP where permitted).
  6. Pay the state fee, submit biometrics, and wait for the decision.
  7. Collect the visa. If you will exceed 183 days, plan your address registration and Latvian tax position before the clock runs.

The direct government cost is small — a modest state fee plus insurance. The real gates are the OECD-source condition and the income bar, and the real cost is the tax consequence of a long stay. All three need checking against your own facts before you apply.

How Expectat helps you get there

The remote-work visa is easy to get wrong on the two things that matter most: whether your income source clears the OECD test, and whether crossing 183 days in Latvia leaves you better or worse off than staying under the line or choosing another base. You want both answered before you file, not after.

  • We map your situation and your numbers — income, days in Latvia, home-country ties and treaty position — so you know your real tax outcome under and over the 183-day line.
  • We pressure-test your specific employer or self-employment structure against Latvia's OECD-source rule and the current income threshold, so you know you qualify before you spend on the application.
  • We execute on the ground with vetted local partners — application filing, compliant insurance, accommodation proof, address registration and tax setup if you become resident.

Frequently asked questions

Does Latvia have a digital nomad visa?

Not under that name. Latvia offers a long-stay (D) visa for remote work, introduced in 2022, which serves the same purpose. It lets a non-EU national live in Latvia for up to a year, renewable once, while working remotely for an employer or self-employed business registered in an OECD member state.

How much income do you need for Latvia's remote work visa?

At least 2.5 times Latvia's average gross monthly salary from the previous year. On the figure published by the immigration authority (PMLP) that is €4,213 per month, but because it tracks the prior-year average salary it is recalculated annually and some 2026 sources cite around €4,538 — confirm the current number before applying.

Does the Latvia remote work visa make you a tax resident?

Not automatically. You become a Latvian tax resident if you spend 183 days or more in Latvia within any 12-month period, or if you establish a permanent home there. Once resident, your worldwide income is taxed at Latvia's 2026 progressive rates of 25.5% up to €105,300 and 33% above. Stay under 183 days and you generally remain a non-resident.

Can you renew the Latvia remote work visa?

Yes, once. The visa is issued for up to one year and can be renewed for a second year, for a maximum stay of about two years. It does not lead to permanent residence — for longer-term settlement you would need to switch to a residence-permit route such as employment, business or investment.

Can family members join you on the Latvia remote work visa?

Not automatically. Family members are not covered by the main applicant's remote-work visa; a spouse and children generally have to qualify and apply on their own basis rather than being attached as dependants. If you are moving with family, plan and budget each person's status separately.
