The short answer

A Mexican account (BBVA México, Banorte, Citibanamex, or fintech Nu) generally needs residency, a CURP, proof of address and sometimes an RFC. Tourists usually can't open a full account. Accounts are in pesos; holding USD locally is restricted, especially cash. Many expats keep a US or multi-currency account and convert as needed.

Opening a bank account in Mexico

A Mexican account at BBVA, Banorte or Citibanamex normally requires temporary or permanent residency, a CURP (population ID), proof of address and often an RFC tax number. Digital banks like Nu and Hey Banco have simpler onboarding for residents. Peso-cash-to-dollar deposits are limited by anti-money-laundering rules.

Multi-currency, crypto and moving money

Accounts are peso-denominated, and holding USD locally is restricted, so many expats keep a US or multi-currency account (Wise, or a US bank) and convert as needed. Mexico's SPEI system gives fast domestic transfers. Crypto exchanges such as Bitso operate under evolving regulation.
