The UK is the original home of the British curriculum (GCSE/IGCSE and A-Level) and offers a large choice of international schools running the International Baccalaureate (PYP/MYP/DP), American, French and other programmes. Provision clusters in London and the Home Counties — Surrey and Cobham host well-known all-through international schools — with further options in Edinburgh, Manchester and other major cities. Places at sought-after schools are competitive, so register early and expect assessment days and waiting lists.

Since 1 January 2025 the UK charges 20% VAT on private and international school fees, which HM Treasury expected to raise headline fees by around 10% on average. Always confirm whether a quoted price is VAT-inclusive when comparing offers, and budget for registration and assessment fees, a refundable deposit, plus transport, trips, exams and uniforms on top of tuition.

State schools and home education

Children resident in the UK can attend state (public) schools free of charge, subject to their immigration status — most family and work visas carry the right to access state education. State schools follow the national curriculum in English and are administered by local authorities (councils), who handle admissions. Elective home education is legal in England: parents may educate children at home and are responsible for a suitable full-time education, though the framework differs across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
