International schools cluster heavily in Bucharest, with a smaller number in Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Brașov and other cities. They offer British (Cambridge IGCSE/A-Level), American and IB programmes, and several are accredited IB World Schools or Cambridge International Schools. Annual fees commonly range from roughly €5,500 to €20,000 depending on the school and age — inexpensive by Western-European standards. Popular schools fill up, and a one-off registration fee is usual, so apply early and request the current fee schedule.

Public schools and home education

Children of legal residents can attend Romanian public schools free of charge; instruction is in Romanian, so younger children tend to adapt quickly while older teens often prefer an international school. Home education is tightly restricted under Romania's national education law and is generally permitted only for children who cannot attend school for health or other exceptional reasons — many families instead enrol with an accredited online or umbrella school abroad.
