International schools in the Czech Republic

International schools are concentrated in Prague, with a handful in Brno. They offer British (IGCSE/A-Level), American, IB and French programmes; Prague alone has several IB World Schools. Annual fees commonly range from roughly CZK 350,000 to 650,000 (about €14,000–26,000), with the IB Diploma years at the top of the range. Expect one-off registration fees of CZK 10,000–50,000 and, at many schools, a refundable deposit. Places at the most popular schools are competitive, so apply early.

Public schools and homeschooling

All foreigners residing in the Czech Republic have access to free basic education in public schools, regardless of their right of residence, and children cannot be refused a place for lack of Czech. Instruction is in Czech; schools run preparatory Czech-language courses for foreign pupils. Compulsory education runs nine years from age six. Homeschooling (individuální vzdělávání) is legal but tightly regulated: children must be enrolled at a Czech school, sit assessments twice a year, and the teaching parent needs the right qualifications (maturita for grades 1–5, a university degree for grades 6–9) plus pedagogical-psychological counselling-centre approval. It covers the nine years of compulsory basic education (grades 1–9) but is not available at upper-secondary level.
