The short answer

Foreigners can open Thai accounts (Bangkok Bank, Kasikornbank, SCB), but usually need a long-stay visa, sometimes a work permit, and a Thai address; tourists increasingly struggle. Accounts are in baht with excellent mobile banking (PromptPay). Wise and Revolut cover FX; document large inbound transfers for future repatriation.

Opening a bank account in Thailand

Thai banks — Bangkok Bank, Kasikornbank, Siam Commercial Bank — can open accounts for foreigners, but requirements tightened: you'll typically need a long-stay visa (LTR, Elite, retirement or work), sometimes a work permit, a Thai address and occasionally a letter from immigration. The LTR visa notably eases this.

Multi-currency, crypto and moving money

Domestic banking is slick — PromptPay instant transfers and strong apps. Accounts are in baht; use Wise or Revolut for cheap inbound FX. If you bring in significant funds (say, to buy property), keep the Foreign Exchange Transaction records, as they matter for later repatriation. Crypto is regulated by the Thai SEC.
