Glossary
Holding company
A company whose main purpose is to own shares in other companies rather than trade itself — used to consolidate ownership and route dividends efficiently.
A holding company sits above one or more operating businesses, owning their shares. Good holding jurisdictions combine a participation exemption (dividends and share-sale gains taxed lightly or not at all), a wide treaty network and low withholding tax — so profits can be consolidated and reinvested without being taxed at every layer.
Why it matters
Where you place a holding company shapes how efficiently you can move profits between businesses, bring in investors, and eventually sell — which is why jurisdictions like Cyprus, Malta, Singapore and the Netherlands are perennial favourites.
